Modes and Elements

I put myself on the spot by calling my last astrology blog ‘the First’, implying a second. The pressure crippled me for a year and a half. Perhaps by calling this the second one, it won’t obligate me to a third in the same way. I’ll simply flow from here on out and write ten thousand before I die. What can I say when so much has already been said? What should I write about Astrology to bring people into a state of understanding? Astrology is a complex discipline that has been degraded in status over the past 2000 years, dismissed by the majority of folks. I escaped that camp, blessed be the technology that reconnected me to the stars. I am here to ask that we suspend our disbelief and simply consider the validity of Astrology as a tool for human evolution. It is a leap I’ve already made on faith. Come on in! The Water is fine, the Fire is lit, the Earth will hold us while we breathe Air. Relax, time is simply passing as atoms are reacting.

Ponder this, you’ve only heard music. You did not know that there was a written language to describe it. When you look at that language even the characters don’t make sense. Even if you know how to play music, the written form is a different animal. Kind of like an English Speaker looking at Mandarin or Sanskrit on a page or vice versa. Let’s say you don’t play an instrument. You hear the music and you feel it, energy perceived by your body, transcribed into your mind resulting in an emotional response that loops back to the mind to evaluate.  The Universe in the same manner moves, on a beat, on a rhythm, on time and schedule. Astrology is a system developed by Human Beings to make sense of the “Great Clockworks” and hopefully to come to terms with our place in it.

We measure the Universe in Earth time. Astrology works here on Earth for us Earthlings. So far, we haven’t discovered anyone that can live on Saturn long enough to do astrology from there. Planets create vibrations as they spin in their inner gravitational workings. The Stars rotate on axes and project light. A blind person on Earth can feel the warmth of the Sun much like a deaf person can feel the music or an earthquake. Vibrations are waveforms. Waveforms pass through or around objects depending upon their frequency versus density. Our ability to observe them is a big complex evolving miracle of mysterious origin! Belief is subjective and relative to opinion and context and requires faith in a process that we do not understand fully. Do we need to believe we are here to be here? Without being here how could we believe? Does one need to be an engineer to run their car through an automatic carwash? No, but it does pay to have your windows up before you roll through.

Do I think that the planets and stars dominate us and dictate our fated moves on Earth? Certainly not! A Quantum reality is far more complex than that. We feel the universe because we are it! The foundational relationships between subatomic particles link them together inside of the Great Harmony. We are learning to discover our full human potential. It is the premise that from here we advance knowing what we now know; yet knowing more will surely come to pass that we do not understand. It is about coming into balance inside the harmony and knowing what note we will play at the time.

The Sun does not spin in one place. It is drifting like our minds; caught in the bounds of the external forces that hold the Galaxy together. The Sun in turn pulls the planets along, unstrung in the wake of its mass and makes one big trip around The Milky Way every 230 million years. That’s 230 million trips around the Sun for Earth, more for Venus and Mercury and less for Mars and the outer planets and asteroids with larger orbits. We can physically observe a whole lot more than the ancient philosophers and astrologers could but they were right about the fundamentals. They could easily see that the Planets moved against the larger background of the Celestial Sphere. As much as music theory was derived from the observation of musicians in their craft, Astrology was derived from observation of human behavior against the timing mechanism of the stars. Quantum physics is proving a lot of their beliefs about how energy works. Vibrations are waveforms. Waveforms pass through or around objects depending upon their frequency and how it reacts with the mass of the object. A guitar sounds different than a piano even when they are playing the same frequency of tone.

“There is Geometry in the humming of the strings, there is music in the spacing of the spheres.” – Pythagorus

4 X 3 = 12

360° ÷ 12 = 30°

These simple equations form the most fundamental principles of astrology. 360° divided by 12 signs equals 30° per sign  The Earth moves around the Sun clearing a little less than 1 degree per day on average. It takes one year to go through all of the signs. That leads us to a question: What is an Astrological sign beyond 30° of the year? The answer lies in the energy of the equation 3 x 4 = 12. The Signs represent four different energies that materialize in three different ways. The Sun is the center of our solar system. During the 30° period that the Sun is said to be in a sign, simply means that at that time of year during sunrise the constellation behind the Sun is the Astrological  sign that we say the Sun is in. When we are at point A, looking beyond point B; we see point C.

Today, according to the system I use, the Sun is on the last degree of Aquarius and approaching the first degree of Pisces. Aquarius is Fixed Air Energy and Pisces is Mutable Water Energy. The archetypes and meanings either psychological, spiritual, and/or physical are derived from these basic labels and their relationships to the other energies. Specifically, since I am talking about the Sun’s movement from one Air sign  into the next, a Water sign. I ask you to think about what happens when we Blow on a Fire versus Putting Water on It. The concept of Element is easier to explain and understand than what we call “Modality”.

The Mode of a sign relates to the conditions or timing within the stage of the process. Processes start, processes sustain, processes culminate and disintegrate. A carpenter builds a table, the table sits in a kitchen for a long time and then eventually the table goes away or changes form. The results please us sometimes and sometimes they don’t. Either way we take what we learn and start over on a different process. Broadly, that is Modality. From here it is back on the labels and numbers to carry us.

In Western Astrology, we have Four Elements – Fire, Earth, Air and Water. We use the three Modes to describe their condition- Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable. Remember the equation 3 x 4 =12. We have 12 Signs. Each sign is a combination of the Element and the Mode. There are 3 Modes of each Element resulting in 4 signs with the same mode and 3 signs with the same element.

Elements:

The Fire Signs: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius

The Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn

The Air Signs: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius

The Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces

Modes:

The Cardinal Signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn

The Fixed Signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius

The Mutable Signs: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces

Composite:

Aries is Cardinal Fire.

Taurus is Fixed Earth.

Gemini is Mutable Air.

Cancer is Cardinal Water.

Leo is Fixed Fire.

Virgo is Mutable Earth.

Libra is Cardinal Air.

Scorpio is Fixed Water.

Sagittarius is Mutable Fire.

Capricorn is Cardinal Earth.

Aquarius is Fixed Air.

Pisces is Mutable Water.

As the Earth moves around the Sun, we ride and tell the stories of the Stars. The origins of the formation of the Archetypes of each sign and the assigned meanings have evolved based on the cultural context and method or system of Astrology practiced. The relationship between Element and Mode in each sign are fairly consistent throughout Western and Vedic Astrological systems. We can once again relate it back to Music. Think about it, 12 notes per key and infinite combinations there of.
