Moonlight

This is a new trip for me, writing about astrology.  Vaguely familiar with the signs of the Zodiac, I spent most of my time on Earth before 2019 only hearing of a Sun sign. That changed one day when I met a brilliant gal that insisted I should give it more consideration. She told me about “The Big Three”— the Sun, Moon, and Rising Signs and ran my birth-chart. She told me that whether I believe in it or not the energies of the cosmos are signaling my soul and materializing through my personality. I was also informed at that time that “Fixed” signs can be stubborn in their beliefs and that I should learn to channel my “Mutability”.  I felt challenged in that moment and my inner fire was lit.

I insisted and argued for many years that the Moon possesses the most powerful celestial influence on our inner workings and that I didn’t have time to watch anything else. I’ve dug holes before and indeed the Moon affects the dirt volume just like the old timers say, wolves howl and the ocean moves. I don’t need any more proof than that. I’ve studied intention in relationship to the Moon.  I plant my crops and initiate projects when the Moon is new and waxing. By the first quarter or full Moon, I can easily see the progress of that project. Longer term projects ebb and flow with the Moon as well. I ask myself the questions: Is this project taking off? Should I put it on the back burner and focus on wrapping up something else? Is it part of a bigger project? How do I integrate what I’ve learned so that I can modify the process and maximize the results? Is this project dead in the water? What do I have left to do before the next New Moon starts a new cycle? Watching the Moon work her magic is easy and in her light are the energies and messages of the firmament.

Sorting out the subtle energies of the Planets, Asteroids, Points and Fixed Stars is a longer story full of intricacies.  A key fundamental that I have derived from listening to Master Astrologers speak is that when talking about energy we must realize the words will always fall short. We are talking about energy signatures and patterns that materialize and replicate invisibly. The consequences/results/materializations of our previous choices are made visible in the present moment—the only place where choices are made. The present moment is a dramatic intricate production of all past activities and the actions of individuals everywhere—limitless intersections of all previous events in exactitude. Our lives are truly in each others hands. This has been pointed out by many religious and spiritual teachers only to have the truth arrested and turned into validation for domination of others. We seek control where there is only chance and wish to know when so much is unknowable. If different choices were made by different individuals in the past, the present will also be different. Consideration in how we express what we think and feel and what actions we make in response or reaction are key. Our external projections of personal will resonate as a cascading compound stream through all of the space and time afterwards.

Our inner reality hinges on our perception of everything external to us and what we believe it is. Many theories suggest that by observing the repetition of harmful subconscious patterns one can evolve into a new version of self that responds to events rather than reacts. That statement in its nature is contradictory. How do we observe the unobservable? Astrology is one way. By comparing events in our lives to the archetypal relationships of planetary interactions we begin to see the repetition of themes in our lives that are relative. Subconscious patterns are deeply ingrained in the fundamental structure of an individual personality through inherent genetic make up and social conditioning.  In order to break the bonds of what we perceive ourselves to be and grow, we have to question ourselves and not point to external causes for our own situations. Repeated patterns are interrupted simply by observing the visible behaviors of our own self objectively and how our interactions with the external world play out under the Sun and in the Moonlight.

In form and function a satellite, the Moon reflects light. Light is information. Human Beings use Fibre Optic cables to send messages with light everyday. We beam information into the heavens and back through the atmosphere with invisible signals. Would it be such a huge leap to say that we are once again replicating the forces of the natural world? Our own satellites are a metaphor for the Moon and what is happening with the other energies that we cannot see. The Moon collects and reflects. Human Beings have now begun to glimpse into the relationships of photons, neutrinos, electromagnetism, gamma rays, X-rays, dark matter, quantum realities etc. There is much more to this life than we can see! There will always be more to learn! The Cosmos is the Great Mystery. To seek a deeper understanding of this Mystery is to deny its existence. Awe and appreciation, wonder and enthusiasm, childlike curiosity as we wander through the Night, grasping for security on a tumbling rock hurled long ago by a mysterious creative force.  These magnificent bodies we inhabit, full of feelings and thoughts, an autonomous vessel for our souls. All we can do is observe time passing and avoid replicating counterproductive actions that lead to discomfort and suffering in our physical state and others. A great first step to take is to cultivate a deeper understanding of our own personal cycles in relationship with the Moon’s. By undertaking this task you will begin to practice Astrology, it’s as simple as that. What message is the Moon sending you today?

I’m still at the beginning stages of my Astrological practice. Pondering the Stars will henceforth be a passion of mine until I go toe up. I’ve realized that I do have a unique perspective on it. We all do! That’s what makes it special. Each of our charts represent a picture painted by the cosmos at the time of our birth. Over the past two years I’ve made an intensive study of my own birth chart and I feel like I’m only scratching the surface of what it has to offer me in my day to day life. I’ve been learning from podcasters while sanding away on cabinets, driving nails and riding down the road. I studied my chart relentlessly, sometimes obsessively. The deeper I went; the thicker the plot became and the more uncanny the synchronicities.  Steven Forrest is one of the individuals that I’ve learned a lot by listening to.

In his book The Inner Sky, Mr. Forrest provides a snapshot of the Moon:

“The Moon is the soul of life. Without it, all experience would be mechanical, a pointless meshing of gears. It is the moon that gives happiness and fulfillment.  Despair and ennui are its gifts too, for they are the other side of the same coin.  The moon is love; it is fear; it is human warmth and human depravity.  The sun may build pyramids and space shuttles, but it is the moon that puts the sparkle in our eyes when we behold them.”

(Forrest pg.123-4)

I go outside and look at the Stars and the Moon when visible. The one astronomy class I took did me a world of good. I think it is important to understand the fundamentals of how the Moon moves around the Earth and how the Earth moves within the Solar System and how the Solar System moves through the Galaxy. The experiences I have had without knowing anything about Astrology prove to me that it is uncannily accurate at describing past events in my life. Repeated failures that I only understood in hindsight were roadblocks to a better version of myself. Some gut feeling always preventing me from experiencing life with the utmost enthusiasm during those times. Obviously I lived through it all up until this point. The victories and accomplishments of personal growth prepared me to face the inevitable transitions of aging. My goal now is to use Astrology to make better decisions for myself by triangulating the stars on my situation and keep learning.  The one thing we can’t afford to waste is time, the Moon doesn’t stop for anyone.
